Armagh ladies made the long trip to Roscommon for their second round of the National League on Sunday. The trip and the conditions didnt seem to faze the Armagh girls as they went about trying to gain more points in their league campaign. A few changes to the starting line up from last week against Sligo led to a comprehensive win over the Rossie girls.
Armagh opened the scoring with points coming from Aislinn Hughes (2), Caroline O Hanlon, Shauna O Hagan and Mags Mc Alinden before Roscommon registered their first point from a free in the 7th minute. A small gap in play left Armagh holding possession but unable to hit the target with many chances to convert. Great attacking runs and consistent strong play from Sinead Mc Cleary who moved to midfield ably assisted by Sarah Marley and Siobhan Mackle, Armagh continued their scoring spree leaving them well in the clear again with points coming from Caroline O Hanlon (2) Shauna O Hagan, Aislinn Hughes and Mags Mc Alinden. All Roscommon could muster was a point from play in the dying minutes of the half leaving the teams going in at half time Armagh 0 - 10 Roscommon 0 - 2.
Armagh came out in the second half hoping to capitalise on their first half performance though Roscommon found a gap in the Armagh system but only for powerful defensive play from Cailin Duffy and Laura Brown combining with goalkeeper Catherine Mc Alinden who cleared the lines and found Caroline O Hanlon who laid the ball of to Ciara Lennon who made a wonderful play and left her neatly in the clear for goal chance where she made no mistakes planting the ball to the net. Points from play then followed up from Shauna O Hagan, Sinead Mc Cleary, Aislinn Hughes and Mags Mc Alinden. Armagh now ahead by 14 points, it looked like they were home and dry but Roscommon were still not giving up and in two consecutive attacks placed two balls in the net closing the gap to eight points. Armagh then stepped up the gas again to finish up the game the stronger with a great run from Sinead Mc Cleary from midfield who then finished to the net when the Roscommon defence where caught flat footed. One last attack from Armagh finished in a goal after a scramble between Sinead Mc Parland and Roscommon keeper Maire Mullooly and the ball dribbled over the line aided by Shauna O Hagan. A good win though wasted chances that should have been converted might prove crucial in other games. Final Score Armagh 3-15 Roscommon 2-5.
