Armagh Continue Winning Run 2012-02-22 13:36:00

Armagh ladies continued their winning form by beating top of the table leaders Leitrim on Sunday past in their home grounds Morgan Athletic Grounds.

Armagh missing Caroline O Hanlon and Clodagh Mc Cann of the starting line up from last week got of to a shaky enough start, though Caoimhe Morgan shackled Leitrims Aine Tighe keeping her mainly scoreless only being able to score from frees.  Caitlin Malone who started this week in midfield also done trojan work alongside Sarah Marley.  Sinead Mc Cleary led from the back again with her attacking runs hard to stop with great support from Siobhan Mackle and Sionnain Mc Conville.  Danielle Morgan lined out at half forward though deployed as a sweeper in defence also played a great supporting role to link up with Mags Mc Alinden and Fionnuala Mc Kenna.  Armagh had great possession and should have converted more scores in the first half, hitting 10 wides in the first half with Leitrim only hitting 4 wides.  It took captain Mags Mc Alinden to steady the ship with scores from frees hitting 0-3 from frees and successfully converted a penalty after she was herself pulled down in the box.  Shauna O Hagan and Aisling Hughes making constant runs at the Leitrim defence paid of with points coming from Ciara Lennon and Mc Alinden converting another score before half time.  Although Leitrim had hit a goal early on and only for the woodwork and goal keeping from Catherine Mc Alinden they could have went in with more scores.  They did manage to get 2 scores from frees just before the half time whistle again Aine Tighe hitting the frees.  Half Time Score
Armagh 1-5 Letrim 1-2.

After a stern team talk at half time from management James Daly, Aidan Lennon and Leo Duffy, Armagh went out revitalised and hoped to make more of the ball they had.  Again great work from midfield led to an opening point from Sarah Marley and followed up with a great point from Sinead Mc Cleary.  A blow then hit Armagh with Leitrim's Kiara Keegan on the end of a rebound from the Armagh defence and she made no mistake, this then left 2 points in the game, again Mags Mc Alinden converted another free from far out on the wing which kept Armagh just slightly ahead, a wonderful run by Aisling Hughes up the far side of pitch with a hopeful shot at posts rebounded of the cross bar with Shauna O Hagan waiting to finish the score of, Armagh should  have then pushed ahead, but unfortunately took a back seat and seen a red card with Laura Brown being sent to the line.  This left Armagh under severe pressure though the defence fought hard with Cailin Duffy and Caoimhe Morgan again stepping up a gear to keep the Leitrim girls out.  Leitrim did hit hard and only for the rub of the green for Armagh they could have found themselves in a different position at the end of the game, Leitrim scored 4 unanswered points and it was to be another ten minutes before Armagh added to the O Hagan goal.  Once again experienced players Mags Mc Alinden and Sinead Mc Cleary stepping up and scoring 2 points to hopefullly keep Armagh just ahead to close the game out.  Leitrim were still not done and points again from Aine Tighe and Kiara Keegan meant that they left 2 points in the end.  Armagh did have more chances in the last ten minutes, but 1 player down it was all about possession and fortunately for them they kept the Leitrim girls at bay and sealed victory on a score line of Armagh 2-10 to Leitrim 2-08.  Armagh now take on Wexford in 2 weeks time which should also help them sort out a few niggly injuries going on in the camp.
